Senselessness and Grief

Grief reigns high over the senseless killings at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn. and a nation mourns.  Today’s act is beyond comprehension and those of us who have ever lost a loved one may be able to glimpse a piece of what those families are dealing with now and in the time to come.  When we encounter grief share compassion, comfort and encouragement.

My own father died in a senseless car wreck when I was 11; in fact, unbelievably today marks that painful anniversary.  The wounds have healed but the scars remain.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Praise is not connected to the horrific crimes but simply recognizes God’s compassion in the midst.  He is not the instigator of evil but the initiator of every comfort.
