Crazed USA soccer fans chanted the catchy words repeatedly as they bounced in frenzied rhythm throughout Brazil’s stadiums and world-wide watch parties during the recent FIFA World Cup Tournament. America’s soccer or ‘futbol’ involvement on the global stage has only gained full strength in recent years, and what fun it was to watch! More and more fans proudly strutted out the red, white and blue! After last Tuesday’s painful ousting by a talented Belgium team, enthusiasts learned it requires more than simple, even pure, belief to win a game. Let’s not forget the matter of skill, work ethic and talent, along with health, fitness and injury avoidance.

As unrealistic as the declaration is pertaining to sporting events, could it actually be true in spiritual matters?

John 1:12, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name”

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

John 6:47, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.”

John 20:31, “but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”

Romans 1:16a, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes …”

Romans 10:9, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved”

As scripture so plainly presents the question …

John 16:31, “Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?”

Will you join the blind man in his response to Jesus after his healing?

John 9:38, “And he said, “Lord, I believe.”
